Felia Douros, RN (SNP) 86, of Rock Ridge Rd. in Waterford, passed away Monday March 29, 2010 at the Mystic Healthcare.
She was born on Nov. 12, 1923 in Norwich, the daughter of Constantine and Vasiliki Ballis Karamargin.
Mrs. Douros was married to the late Marcos C. Douros, Sr. who passed away on Jan. 6, 2004.
She had, for many years, been involved in Nursing Services. She worked at the Health Department for the City of New London in the early fifties. She was a pioneer in bringing health services to the needy and would visit homes in depressed areas. She went on to work in many hospitals in the area as an RN including 25 years at the Pond House at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London.
Felia was always looking to increase her skills and knowledge. She became one of the first School Nurse Practitioners as she returned to UConn and completed graduate studies in her fifties. Her career included school nursing as she served at several schools in the New London area. Felia remained active in the nursing profession well into her 70’s. Her dedication and relentless advocacy for the health and welfare of children and patients served as inspiration to many. She thrived on challenges and helped redefine the role of the school nurse.
Felia was known as a consummate professional while being a distinct joy to work with. She brought a deeply caring attitude and wonderful sense of humor to the many thousands of lives she touched. She will long be remembered in the New London – Waterford area by the many students and colleagues she worked with.
A lifetime member of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church. A 1942 Graduate of The Williams Memorial Institute. After which she worked as a stellar telegraph typist at 100 words per minute with the Western Union co. Helping their war time service. She then attended The University of Connecticut, Yale New Haven University, University of Virginia, and earned her BS in Nursing, in 1949. While at UCONN she participated in their athletic Department playing basketball as a UConn Husky. She began her nursing career as head nurse at The University of Virginia Medical Hospital. After returning to CT she worked for The City of New London as a Public Health Nurse, She then worked at the Norwich Sate and Uncas on The Thames Hospitals. She continued her Career with The City of New London as a school Nurse servicing most of the Public Schools Including New London High School, during which time she continued her education at The University of Connecticut and earned her School Nurse Practitioner
