George Richard Cole, Dick, passed into heavenly glory on Saturday January 2, 2010. He was a beloved and adored husband, father and grandfather. He had a profound passion and love for God and his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Helen Cole, and his first grandchild, Cole Dean Wilmot. He leaves his wife, Amelia (Amy) of 48 years; his four children: Dr. Tamera Cole Stenson (Rev. Sherman), Virginia Wilmot, Georgina Cole-Mc Carthy, Richard Scott Cole (Claudia); his grandchildren: John and David Stenson, Stephen Wilmot, Ashley and Lily McCarthy, Joshua, Jillian and Alexis Cole; his brothers: Rodney and Charles Cole; and many nieces and nephews. Dick graduated, in 1959, from Kansas State University, with a BS in Electrical Engineering. Dick retired from General Dynamics, Electric Boat Division where he was principle engineer and head of the Fiber Optics Laboratory. He also headed the Physics Division of the Coast Guard Research and Development from 1979-1982. During his retirement years he loved to travel, play games and cards with his grandchildren and take photos. He was an avid model railroader and member of Lionel Collectors Club of America. He enjoyed word puzzles, mathematical challenges and astronomy. Dick was very patriotic, serving two years active duty in the Army Corps of Engineers at the US Waterways Experiment Station, Vicksburg MS. He was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. Dick was a member of IEEE. Calling hours will be Wed. Jan. 6, 2010 from 6-8pm at the Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thurs., Jan. 7, 2010 at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Church in New London, CT at 1:30pm. His burial will follow in the St. Mary Cemetery, New London.
